You’re in your home everyday so you may be blind to some of the signs that you need your windows replaced. Window performance doesn’t just deteriorate overnight; it’s something that happens as your home ages so you can easily have become accustomed to these changes. Here are some signs that your home is in need of new windows.

You notice that your windows create condensation and/or frost. Condensation can be a normal, depending on the time of day and the temperatures both outside and in your home. However if you’re noticing moisture in between the panes of your windows, that means the seal of your windows are broken. With the seal being broken that means air from inside and outside your home are being transferred and your home is not energy efficient. This, of course, can lead to a higher energy bill and more money out of your pocket annually.

Another thing to watch out for would be, if your windows are hot to the touch during the warmer months and cold to the touch in the colder months of the year. That’s another clear sign that your windows are no longer performing at top level. An average of 10-20% of your homes energy is lost through just your windows alone; homeowners should take that into consideration when thinking about replacing their windows. Harley Exteriors has an excellent variety of energy efficient windows; many of our satisfied customers are able to tell a difference in their internal temperature just after a few days of their new windows being installed! If you feel a draft when you are close to a window in your home, that’s another apparent sign that you are losing energy in your home.

There are physical signs of needing new windows as well. The frame itself may show signs of rotting and/or cracking, along with noticeable color loss. Wooden windows are especially prone to decay as they are regularly exposed to moisture here in the Pacific Northwest. This can make the windows difficult to open and close and they can be potential hosts for mold and insects as well.

If your energy bill and noise in your home have increased, this may be one more sign that you need to replace your windows. Because of the energy that can be lost from your windows alone, it’s important to make sure that you have ENERGY STAR rated windows. The Olympic Series of energy efficient windows are exclusive to the Harley Exteriors Company and are made to handle the weather we get here in Seattle, WA. If you live near a busy street with old windows you may be able to help with the noise with new windows as well. New windows may be able to provide better noise cancellation.
